Step-By-Step Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 4S Using Absinthe For Windows [iOS 5.0.1 / iOS 5]

In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5 using Absinthe for Windows users.Here are some important points to note before you proceed.
  • This guide is meant for iPhone 4S users. iPad 2 users can checkout this step-by-step guide. iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users can checkout this guide, iPod touch users can checkout this guide and iPad 1 users can checkout this guide.
  • This guide is only for Windows users. Mac users can refer to this step-by-step guide.
  • Absinthe performs an untethered jailbreak.
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPhone before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPhone.
  • Please ensure you've updated iTunes to the latest version (iTunes 10.5.3).
  • Warning: There have been some complaints of users losing their camera roll, so please ensure you've backed up your iPhone before proceeding.
Step 1: Download Absinthe for Windows from this link and save the application in a folder named "Absinthe" on your desktop.
Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder. Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.
Note:
Please launch the application as an Administrator. Right Click on the Absinthe exe and select the "Run as Administrator" option.
Step 3: After launching Absinthe, you will be prompted to connect your iPhone 4S.
Note:
a. Please disable the passcode temporarily to jailbreak your iPhone 4S (Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock -> Turn Passcode Off).
b. Please also remove any VPN settings that you may have configured on your iPhone.
Step 4: Absinthe should detect your iPhone and also mention the iOS firmware that is running on it. Click on the Jailbreak button.
After clicking on the Jailbreak button the tool will give a progress update on the various stages of the jailbreak process such as:
"Beginning jailbreak" (note this can really take sometime - in our case this step took more than 10 minutes on our iPad 2, though it was lot quicker on iPhone 4S)
"Sending initial data" at this time you will notice that "Restoring in Progress" message on your iPhone 4S (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)
"Waiting for reboot"
"Waiting for device to finish rebooting" as your iPhone 4S is rebooting.
"Preparing jailbreak data"
"Sending payload data" (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)
Step 5: In the end you'll be prompted with the message informing you that the jailbreak is "Almost done - just unlock the screen if necessary, then tap "Jailbreak" icon to finish.
Step 6: Unlock your iPhone. The icon you should look for is the Absinthe icon and not "Jailbreak", it may not be on the first home screen page so you're better off just searching for it using Spotlight.
Step 7: Launch the Absinthe app. It should load the greenpois0n site and reboot your iPhone 4S. After it is rebooted, you should see the Cydia icon.
That's it, your iPhone 4S is successfully jailbroken.
Troubleshooting tips:
Here are some troubleshooting tips if you hit an issue while jailbreaking your iPhone 4S with Absinthe:
1. If you get "Error establishing a database connection" error message while loading the site or are seeing a white screen when they launch the Absinthe app then use the following trick:
  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Then tap on General, followed by Network and then tap on VPN, here you will get "A configuration error occurred" message.
  • However after a minute, your iPhone 4S will reboot and you should be able to see Cydia icon your iPhone 4S home screen.
2. If it still doesn't help, just reboot your iPhone 4S and start the process all over again. Remember to disable your passcode and remove VPN settings when you try again.
3. Ensure you've updated iTunes to the latest version (iTunes 10.5.3).
4. If you think it is taking a long time (or get the feeling that Absinthe isn't doing anything) then be patient, it took more than 45 minutes to jailbreak our iPad 2 using Absinthe. Check out the timings mentioned by us above for some of the steps.
5. Please ensure there are no host file entries.
6. If you're having problems using Absinthe, you can checkout the command line interface of Redsn0w (CLI) tool for Windows that was released by iPhone Dev team earlier.
7. If troubleshooting tips 1 and 6 don't help then iPhone Dev team has advised restoring your iPhone 4S if you don't care about unlocking. Restoring is not ideal so our advise would be to try again after sometime as it could be very well be due to the load on the servers.
8. If you've subscribed to iTunes Match, but having problems playing music after jailbreaking using Absinthe then try to disable iTunes Match (via Settings -> Music -> iTunes Match -> On/Off toggle) and enable iTunes Match again. It seems to have resolved the issue for some users.
9. Fix for grey Jailbreak button:
A number of readers have reported that their iPhone 4S isn't recognised after launching Absinthe and the Jailbreak button stays grey. Reader R Wass has a tip to fix this issue. He writes:
If you are having the problem where you cannot click jailbreak on absinthe with your device plugged in, start your mac in safe mode.  You do this by turning it off and starting it back up while holding the shift key, then launch absinthe after it starts in safe mode. You should now be able to click jailbreak when you plug in your device. it worked for me.

10. If you think App Store is not working after jailbreaking using Absinthe, please be patient, it has taken a long time for some users, but it eventually loads fine. You can also try to reboot tour iPhone to see if it helps.

Apple Closes In On Android Owing to High iPhone 4S Demand: Nielsen

Nielsen's latest report on the smartphone ecosystem reaffirms NPD's stats, which showed Apple gained significant momentum amongst U.S. consumers who bought a phone in Q4 (October - December) of last year.From the report:
Among recent acquirers, meaning those who said they got a new device within the past three months, 44.5 percent of those surveyed in December said they chose an iPhone, compared to just 25.1 percent in October. Furthermore, 57 percent of new iPhone owners surveyed in December said they got an iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 4S helped reduce Android's lead over iPhone, from 36.5 percent to a mere 4 percent, in just a matter of three months. Also, the last sentence suggests that it wasn't just the iPhone 4S that contributed to these figures, but also the lower priced iPhone 4 and (free) iPhone 3GS.
Overall marketshare amongst all those surveyed didn't undergo a major change though. Android remained at the top with a share of 46.3 percent, followed by iOS at 30 percent trailed by the usual suspects - RIM, Windows Mobile and others.

Siri Isn’t The Bandwidth Guzzler That is Ruining Mobile Networks

The Washington Post published a piece titled "Apple's Siri threatens to damage cellphone service for all" yesterday, which held Siri responsible for excessive load on mobile networks, because of its frequent communication with Apple's servers. The Washington Post's Paul Farhi claims:
"Siri's dirty little secret is that she's a bandwidth guzzler, the digital equivalent of a 10-miles-per-gallon Hummer H1."
We have, if you recollect, heard the same thing before, when analytics firm Arieso's report came out, revealing that the iPhone 4S consumes twice the data of an iPhone 4, apparently due to Siri. But there are other factors that contribute to the excessive consumption as well, like high-res images shot by the camera, the faster network and the improved antenna.
From The Washington Post article:
This means that Siri’s data-hogging ways are a problem for more than just those willing to foot the bill. As networks become congested, everyone’s service deteriorates. Private desire becomes a public issue. Calls are dropped or never completed; Internet access slows. First-class airline passengers don’t really compromise service for those in coach. But bandwidth hogs do.
The article paints a very grim future of wireless communications, which due to its limitations could constrain innovation in mobile technology.
As GigaOm rightly points out, Siri is merely the start of a phase where voice interfaces become mainstream, and in many cases the primary interface. Apple marketed Siri in its promotions on TV and print as a major selling point, which means, not just people familiar with technology, but smartphone users in general are using the service on a daily basis. GigaOm's Stacey Higginbotham also points out that studies have shown Siri hardly consumes any data, but it has made it easier for us to guzzle more data as it makes it easier to surf the web. But should Siri or users be blamed for it?
iPhone isn't the top shareholder of the smartphone market, and yet carriers can't cope up with the traffic. Picture a future when, another major OS like Android comes bundled with a similar service, that relies heavily on the network.
The solution to a spectrum crunch coupled with increasing demand for data is, of course, optimization. And that is why services like Onavo are really important.
Talking specifically about Siri - for starters, Apple could do some of the voice processing right on the device, just like the pre-Siri "Voice Control" did. Presently, even for something as simple as playing a song, Apple sends data back and forth to start playing. Apple obviously thought about this and didn't go for it, possibly because of the syntax-free language of Siri as opposed to Voice Control. But Apple's 1000 engineers working on next generation chips can, sometime in the future, achieve on-device processing for at least some of these commands, without compromising much performance.
GigaOm, additionally, talks about the validity of the "spectrum crunch" claim:
Stop listening to the carriers, who actually do have spectrum they can deploy if they want to work a little harder and spend a little more, and start thinking about how Wi-Fi or white spaces broadband (Super Wi-Fi) can play a role in taking congestion off over the air data networks.
Passing a spectrum bill that allows for more unlicensed airwaves would be a start, as would leaving the FCC to deal with the highly technical issues surrounding spectrum auctions. Pushing the FCC to investigate special access fees would also help, as it might lower the rate of bringing a fiber pipe out to areas so ISPs can support large-scale Wi-Fi or white spaces networks. But first, we have to understand how the wireless and cellular networks work, so we can propose viable solutions instead of blaming applications that make our lives better for congesting our network.
We can't understand how applications like Siri can be blamed to ruin mobile networks when most carriers in the U.S. have killed the unlimited data plans and are throttling top 5% of the users down to unacceptable 2G speeds.

iPhone 4S Now “In Stock” in Apple Online Stores

Ever since Apple launched iPhone 4S - the fifth generation iPhone - they have had a tough time keeping up with the unprecedented demand.The shipping dates quickly slipped from "In Stock" to few days and then to 1 - 2 weeks most of the holiday shopping season. In fact, carriers cited shipping estimates of more than 2-3 weeks a month after iPhone 4S was launched.
Not surprisingly, Apple blew away estimates by announcing last week that they had sold a whopping 37 million iPhones in the last quarter.
However, it looks like Apple has finally managed to catch up with the demand as Electronista reports that iPhone 4S is now listed as "In Stock" in many Apple online stores. "In Stock" means that Apple is in a position to ship the iPhone 4S almost immediately.  The shipping estimates had dropped to 3 to 5 days two weeks back.
The drop in demand after the holiday season probably has also helped Apple to bring down the shipping estimates.
We wonder what would have happened if Apple had launched a redesigned iPhone 5 instead of the iPhone 4S. Any guesses?

Siri Can Also Play The Piano [Video]

It looks like folks at Yamaha were inspired by it and they have figured out a way to play the piano using Siri.Yamaha hasn't used a Siri Proxy like other hacks. They have given Jim Dalrymple of The Loop the following information of how it works:
Take a standard MIDI songfile and convert it to an audio file (while maintaining the MIDI data). The songfile is then sent wirelessly via WiFi to an Apple Airport Express (which is mounted underneath a Yamaha Disklavier reproducing piano. The audio output of the Airport Express is then connected to the analog MIDI inputs of the Disklavier, using a standard audio cable.
Then, you simply ask Siri to play your favorite song from your iTunes library, and Siri responds immediately, by making the Disklavier’s keys and pedal move up and down, recreating the performance, including full orchestration.
