Method To Unlock iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS Without Jailbreaking Appears To Be Temporary

Yesterday, the blogosphere was abuzz with news that it was possible to unlock iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS without the need to jailbreak your iPhone.
When we first read about it, it seemed quite unbelievable, but various user reports, a video and confirmation from sites like Gizmodo seemed to suggest it works. It was unbelievable because never in the history of the iPhone, unlocking an iPhone has been possible without hacking the device or using hardware such as GEVEY SIM. But based on comments from our wonderful readers and MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team, it looks like the unlock is only temporary.
As MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team points out:  "it'll just relock again once a new TMSI is required (various normal network operations require TMSI refresh)". He goes on to add: "If you are successful at temporarily gaining network access, you'll lose it as soon as TMSI is refreshed (happens often). the TMSI refresh is a normal, regular action on the network (it's actually intended to protect you)." If you want to read more details about TMSI checkout this Wikipedia link.
So to summarize, though we have seen the video and heard reports that suggest the method works, we have not been able to confirm if the unlock is permanent. So don't fret if it doesn't work for you. We'll keep you posted if we have any further updates.
As one of our readers commented, the fact that someone figured out a way to unlock iPhone even temporarily using not so straight forward process is just beyond us.
