Earlier in the week, we had reported that purported cases of the next generation iPad suggest that it will get an iPod Touch 4G-like form factor with a flat back and tapering sides.
But the rumor has taken an interesting twist. Wall Street Journal is reporting that the iPad 2 cases that were found on Chinese e-commerce website, AliBaba.com have been removed after a takedown request.Wall Street Journal reports:
But someone -- it’s unclear who -- doesn’t seem to appreciate all the attention: Alibaba.com was asked to remove the listings. “We do not know whether these products are what they say they are, but we have received a legitimate takedown request and are removing the listings,” Alibaba Group spokesman John Spelich said Wednesday.
It is still not clear who requested the listings to be removed. Alibaba Group spokesman John Spelich said:
“We do not know whether these products are what they say they are, but we have received a legitimate takedown request and are removing the listings.”
But he did not disclose the source of the takedown request. Wall Street Journal traced down one of the companies selling the purported iPad 2 cases. They report:
A man who answered the phone at one of the companies, called Fullchance Industrial Co., claimed that it works with Hon Hai Precision Industry and said Fullchance possesses firsthand material regarding the features of a new iPad, making the design of their case “extremely accurate.” The man declined to give his name or to elaborate, saying the matter was “very serious.” Hon Hai, which assembles Apple’s iPhone and iPad, among other gadgets, is the world’s largest electronics contract manufacturer by revenue. The Taiwan-based company, whose main factories are in southern China, is known for carefully guarding its customers’ trade secrets. A spokesman for Hon Hai said he saw no connection between Hon Hai and the listings on Alibaba.com. A second Hon Hai spokesman called remarks such as those made by the man from Fullchance “hostile.” Asked how they knew the design details of the iPad 2, other merchants selling the cases on Alibaba declined to comment, or simply hung up immediately.
Japanese Mac blog, Macotakara published a video of the cases that you can checkout below:
Meanwhile, 9to5Mac has removed the images of the mold drawings, which revealed some interesting details of the next generation iPad. They have updated the post with the following message:
Update, we’ve been told (not so nicely) to remove those mold drawings because they are the property of someone else. We’ve complied.
It will be interesting to see if the design of the next generation iPad turns out to be similar to the purported iPad 2 cases.
